Sun Safety

You can be SunSmart and still enjoy the great outdoors. Being SunSmart is about protecting yourself and your family from too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.  All you need to do is Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap.  It also means avoiding exposure to UV radiation from tanning devices such as sunbeds.  Too much UV radiation can cause skin cancers, including deadly melanoma. In New Zealand, we have especially high levels of UV radiation in our environment because our skies are clear and low in pollution, and we are closer to the sun in summer. Our weather is also very changeable – rain or cloud one minute and sun the next.  Add to these the typical kiwi outdoor lifestyle, and some very fair skin types, and the risk of skin cancer is quite high.

For more information about how you can be SunSmart, visit the SunSmart website.
