16.3.2009 - Grab a mate for Walk2Work Day

If you’re thinking about hitting the pavement for Walk2Work Day in Whakatane this Wednesday, why not make it more fun and ask friends or workmates to join you?

A free healthy breakfast for people who walk to work is being held from 730am – 830am at Margaret Mahy Square, outside the Whakatane Library this Wednesday 18 March. The Eastern Bay event, one of 12 nationally, is being organised by Toi Te Ora – Public Health, and Whakatane District Council with support from Foot Mechanics, Pathway to Health, Sustainable Living New Zealand and Living Streets Aotearoa.

Walk2Work Day promotes the positive benefits of walking - on the body, environment and pocket. Organisers are encouraging people to gather friends, family or workmates and make it a fun and regular way to get to work.

“Walking with other people keeps it interesting and keeps you motivated,” says Toi Te Ora – Public Health, Regional Manager, Graeme Savage. “We’d love to see people at the breakfast having walked to work with their colleagues. There are heaps of giveaways and everyone goes into the draw to win a new pair of sports shoes and a $95 biomechanical assessment from Foot Mechanics.”

Eastern Bay of Plenty PHO, Walk 2 Health coordinator, John Voyle says getting into a walking to work habit has short and long term health benefits – and anyone can do it.

“There are options for everyone, if you live far away you can park and walk part way,” he says. ”If walking every day doesn’t suit, set a walking schedule and decide at the beginning of the week which days you’ll work to work, organise it with your buddy – and stick to it.”
