16.2.2009 - Health Warning Lifted: Waimana River

The latest check by Environment Bay of Plenty has found no sign of the recent toxic algal bloom in any Eastern Bay rivers. The health warning for Waimana River, put in place mid November, has been lifted.

Toi Te Ora – Public Health, Medical Officer of Health, Dr Jim Miller says it’s likely that this is due to the increased flow in the rivers following the recent rain.

“Blooms can reoccur at any time so it’s always safest to check the water before you get in,” he says. “If the water looks discoloured, smells unusual, or if there is scum on the surface of lakes or on the beds of rivers, swim or play somewhere else.”

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can release toxins, which can trigger asthma and hay fever attacks in susceptible individuals, as well as causing skin rashes, tummy upsets, and even neurological effects such as tingling round the mouth, headaches, general breathing difficulties and visual problems.
