Burial and Cremation

It is important to ensure that human remains do not pose a health risk to the public during transportation, embalming or subsequent contact by the bereaved, or any other situation where people may come into contact with human remains.

Toi Te Ora - Public Health Service is responsible for ensuring that the disposal of the dead occurs in a controlled, hygienic and dignified manner, which as far as possible demonstrates respect for the wishes, as well as the cultural and spiritual beliefs, of the deceased and next of kin.

Contact us if you have a complaint or information about an unlawful burial or cemeteries and burial grounds.

Disinterment

It is illegal to remove from a burial place any body (or the remains of any body) buried in any burial ground without a disinterment licence.
